Back at School

After several prolonged closures during Covid, Umoja Primary is finally open again with over 325 children already at school.
Because they have missed so much school, the children who should be starting in year 2 are back in year 1 catching up on the basics. This means we have a double-sized year group and have to find additional classroom facilities and furniture.
The photo above shows older primary children in a Math lesson. We are always impressed at how engaged the children are with their lessons and the advanced subject matter they master.

Everybody is working hard to help the children get back to where they should be as the education they get at Umoja is so important to them in the years to come.

Water, Power & Transportation

I has been 5 long years of struggle to get running water to the school. Literally, we had to buy our own pipes and run them from the closest water connection to the village where the school is located. It was tedious and expensive. Finally, i am happy to say we have water at school.

Our current challenge is power. We have been able to run power lines from the closest power source to the school now we are waiting on the transformer. It's too expensive to buy and the government doesn't seem interested in helping and this I can't afford it on my own. I am currently ignoring it because I am exhausted from chasing local officials to do something.

We are in the process of building the Computer Lab, Chemistry and Physics Lab, and Library. That's my goal for the next 2 years.

After the pandemic, most parents complained that their young kids have to walk a very long distance to get to school. So I ordered a small used school bus from Japan. It arrived 6 months ago. But several factors have made it difficult for me to pay taxes on it. Taxes are more than $11,000 almost the price of the bus. And the fees keep adding up as the revenue authorities keep charging the longer it stays in their storage. I could use some help.
